A Lakeside Wedding in Michigan

Last summer, I was asked to step in and do the calligraphy for the envelopes for the wedding of Elizabeth Ann Siefer to Christopher Briggs Robinson. The calligrapher who did the beautiful calligraphy on the invitations was unavailable at the time. The lovely invitation was designed and printed by the talented Zoe Papas of Zoe Ink in Burlington, Vermont. My thanks go to Anita Siefer, the mother of the bride for her kind permission to feature photographs of the wedding on my blog.

A Vermont Wedding…

Recently I was asked to do the calligraphy for the Pomerleau, Lockwood wedding in Burlington Vermont. The talented Zoe Papas of  Zoe Ink initially asked me to write out the bride and groom’s names for her in Copperplate. She is the master of integrating calligraphy with her beautiful letterpress designs. I love the winter theme for the invitations followed up with the surprising and delightful tandem bicycle on the escort cards and envelopes. A promise of spring and summer to come and bicycle rides in the countryside to look forward to, not to mention the ride that marriage takes us through! Very fun! I especially enjoyed doing the escort cards… adding flourishes to go with the bicycle theme. The wedding was beautifully styled by Belinda of Belinda Norris Events.

Copperplate is done with a pointed pen, I use gouache as it gives a more solid color than ink and the color range is unlimited. I have included an image of my gouache bowl, and the incidental art I make. Pen scratchings on paper, testing the ink flow and the piece of paper towel that I clean my nib on whilst working. For more information on Ann Vollum Calligraphy please visit my web site. Photographs from the wedding are thanks to Kendall at Belinda Norris Events.

Congratulations to Alexis and William the bride and groom, and thank you for having me as part of your team for your wedding. Wishing you many happy years ahead.

Hauck / Jensen Wedding

Jenna Hauck hired me to do the calligraphy for her recent wedding. Jenna was a lot of fun to work with and had all sorts of very creative ideas. The slide show below highlights the envelopes, seating cards and signs I prepared for her.

Jenna wanted a European look to her envelopes and did not want a traditional style of calligraphy. We decided on the hand I call “Secondo” written on a slant.

Jenna gave me these wonderful cardboard doves available from “Michaels”  arts and crafts stores. They are a cheap card so I was a little worried about writing on them, however they worked really well. These doves were going to be strung up on ribbons and hung in front of a picture window at the reception.

The signs were written using Faber-Castell, “PITT artist pen big brush” pens. These pens are Indian Ink, waterproof and are reasonably light fast and great to write with. The signs were painted and then sanded down to get a weathered look.

Wedding Parasols

For a recent wedding I was asked to create parasols by a very creative bride. They were so much fun to do that I would like to share the results. I created four parasols to the Bride’s order. She gave me the wording and left everything else up to me.

These rice paper and bamboo parasols are delicate, and add a beautiful personal touch to a wedding. They also make wonderful props for the photographer and are great keepsakes.

Wedding Envelope in Secondo

This envelope is done in a hand I call Secondo on my website. It is a hand that I created drawing on my knowledge of traditional calligraphy. I loved writing on a slant on the envelope and having the artistic license that the Bride Jenna Hauck gave me to do a less formal wedding envelope.

Another Beastly Book

As a calligrapher and book artist I like to combine my skills. This is a book that I made and filled with amazing beasties! I dyed the paper, bound the book and then drew the beasties. This binding uses leather tapes which I decorated with glass beads from India. The title of the book is written on kraft paper. Do you see my signature mouse in the corner?
